Components developed for use in temperatures as low as -40 ºC demonstrate features such as specially selected sealing elements and high quality steel or non-ferrous metals. When determining suitability of components for extremely low temperatures we need to know whether the product will just be stored or whether it will have to be fully operational at these temperatures. |
The products described here can operate effectively down to a temperature of -40 ºC. For pressure regulators and filter pressure regulators with limited temperature range please see technical data. The response pressures differentiate in these cases from those of conventional components. In extreme cold hardening seals require higher operating or switching pressures. These relevant pressures are described in the technical data sheets. To be functionally operational at – 40 ºC the seals need to demonstrate a residual elasticity.
Apart from this it is also possible to store these devices at lower temperatures if they are not put into operation (e.g. for transport purposes or for storing in spare parts warehouses). In these cases the seals maintain their elasticity until they reach the low-temperature brittleness point (Ts), which can certainly be -60 ºC and even lower. The material is, however, reversible and regains its elasticity when the temperature is increased once more.
Particular attention should be to preparation of air. Any flow of water in the valve or cylinder caused by an excessively high dew point must be prevented at all cost. This would immediately result in the formation of ice, leading to irreversible damage of the seals, guide and operational areas. It is recommended that the dew point of the compressed air be set at 10 °C below the ambient temperature. Refer here also to ISO 8573.
The devices are also given an initial lubrication, dispensing with the need for oil spray lubrication.
